(For families · Lake Hopatcong, NJ)
Wakeboarding & wakesurfing for kids. They'll stand up the first day.
Wakeboard, wakesurf or tube — it's easier than it looks, kids learn faster than adults, and they're hooked the moment they're up. Any age. Life vests always. Parents watch from a few feet away — and ride too. Calm lake water, about an hour from NYC.

Why it works for kids
Honestly? They pick it up faster than you will.
Some of our best first-session riders are kids — on the wakeboard and the wakesurf. Low speed, soft water, a big stable wake, and a calm lake — it all plays to a child's strengths.
They're not afraid
Adults overthink the fall. Kids just go — and that's most of the battle.
Light & low to the board
A low center of gravity means balance comes naturally. The board does the work.
They're sponges
Give a seven-year-old two tries and they'll out-ride the parent who's been "almost getting it" all afternoon.
Any age
There's no "too young" to be on the water.
As a rough guide, most kids start wakeboarding or wakesurfing on their own around 6–7 — once they're comfortable in the water and can follow simple instructions. Younger than that? They still get a full day: riding tandem with a parent or driver, tubing, swimming, and cruising the lake.
There's no hard rule. It's about water-confidence, not a birthday. Tell us your child's age and we build the session around it.
- ✦Under ~6 — tandem rides, tubing, swimming, cruising the cove
- ✦6–9 — first stand-ups behind the boat on a wakeboard or wakesurf, low and slow
- ✦10+ — wakeboarding the wake, surfing rope-free, first tricks
Safe by design
One of the gentler watersports — and we run it conservatively.
Wakesurfing happens right behind the boat, on a soft rolling wave, at a speed slower than you'd jog. On a calm lake it's gentler still. Here's how we keep it safe for kids:
A USCG-approved vest on every rider — properly fitted for each child, kid & adult sizes, no exceptions.
Walking-pace 10–12 mph — your driver controls the speed the whole time.
A driver coaching every ride — eyes on your child, calling each adjustment.
Never pushed — we go at the kid's pace. Want to ride tandem or just tube first? Easy.
Calm, protected water — Lake Hopatcong is usually glassy in the morning. A fall is just a splash next to the boat.
Parents, you're on the boat
Watch from a few feet away. Then take your turn.
This isn't a drop-off. It's your own private boat — you're right there the whole time, camera out, cheering them on. Plenty of room to sit back in the shade between sets.
And here's what happens every time: the kids make it look so easy that the parents have to try. Most of you end up riding too. It becomes the day the whole family talks about for the rest of the summer.
The ideal setup
A few friends, a few parents, one boat.
Kids learn faster — and have way more fun — when they're cheering each other on. Our favorite version of this day is a few kids and their parents sharing the boat. But there's no minimum. One child and one parent is a perfect session too.
- ✦Bring a few kids and their parents — up to 12 guests on the boat.
- ✦Or come solo — one child, one parent, the whole boat to yourselves.
- ✦Everyone rides, tubes, swims & cruises the lake between sets.
Private boat from $320/hour · up to 12 guests · free reschedule for weather.
"Fantastic day on the lake with Cameron! Communicative and punctual, a great instructor for our junior water skiers, and the friendliest guy on the lake. Great boat, great equipment, highly recommend!"
"Cameron was great. Family-friendly and super accommodating to the multiple (and at times conflicting!) needs of kids. We'll be back."
"Excellent experience. Knowledgeable, entertaining and a gracious host. He knows the history of the lake too, which made it even more fun. Highly recommend for family or friends. A+++"
Parents ask
The questions we get most.
What age can my kid start wakeboarding or wakesurfing?+
Most kids start riding on their own around 6–7, once they're comfortable in the water and can follow simple instructions. Younger kids ride tandem with a parent or driver — or just tube and swim — and still get a full day. It's about water-confidence more than a birthday — just tell us your child's age and we set it up to match.
Is it actually safe?+
It's one of the gentler watersports out there. Every rider wears a properly fitted USCG-approved life vest, the boat moves at a walking-pace 10–12 mph, the wake is soft and rolling, and the driver coaches your child the entire time. Lake Hopatcong's calm water is easier and gentler than the ocean — a fall is just a splash a few feet from the boat — and we never push a kid past what they're comfortable with.
Can I come and watch?+
Always. It's your own private boat — you're aboard the whole time, a few feet away, taking photos and cheering them on. There's plenty of room to relax in between. And most parents end up riding too.
Can my kid bring friends?+
Please do — it's our favorite way to run the day. A few kids and their parents on the boat (up to 12 guests total) means they hype each other up and learn faster for it. Split between families, it's also easy on everyone's wallet. That said, one child and one parent is a perfect session too.
What if my child is nervous?+
Totally normal — and totally fine. We start slow: a swim, a tube ride, a tandem ride with the driver, time just sitting on the board. Kids almost always warm up once they see how gentle it is. There's zero pressure to "perform." If they only want to splash and cruise the lake, that's a great day too.
Where are you, and how far is it from NYC?+
We're on Lake Hopatcong in Northern New Jersey — 453 N River Styx Rd, Hopatcong. It's about an hour up I-80 from NYC, and an easy drive from most of North Jersey. We run May through October, and mornings are usually the calmest water for first-timers.
What should we bring?+
Swimsuits, towels, sunscreen, and a change of clothes. We handle the boards, the life vests, the wave and the driver. Pack snacks and drinks for the kids if you like — there's room to keep them cold.
How much is it, and how do we book?+
A private family session is from $320/hour for the whole boat (up to 12 guests). Most families do 2–3 hours so everyone gets plenty of water time. Book online below, or call us at (973) 878-4990 and we'll help you pick the right length for your kids' ages.
(Less posing. More doing.)
The day they'll never stop talking about.
Bring the kids, bring their friends, bring yourself. We bring the boat, the boards, the safety gear and a driver who's great with first-timers.
